On 4 October 2021 Langport & District History Society held its first meeting since March 2020. It was an Annual General Meeting, the first for two years, and it was attended by about 20 members. It was held at Hurds Hill, just outside the town, the family home of Langport’s most famous resident, Walter Bagehot.
After the AGM, there was an entertainment in the drawing room, entitled ‘An Evening with Eliza Bagehot’, to commemorate the centenary of the death of Walter Bagehot’s widow in that very house in October 1921, aged 88. This took the form of a celebration of her long life by way of extracts read from Eliza’s own diaries and letters, along with other pertinent material, including the reminiscences of her younger sister, Emilie, and local press reports. The disembodied voice of Eliza was portrayed by Huish’s own Annabel Davis, and the narrator was Barry Winetrobe. The 40-minute piece was well-received by all present.
