Langport Cemetery

Langport Cemetery was opened on 3 July 1880, when the Church of England part was consecrated by the Bishop of Bath and Wells. The churchyard of All Saints’ Church had been full for many years, during which time burials were made in the churchyard of St Mary’s, Huish Episcopi. As the Langport Herald of 10 July 1880 put it:

“It had long been felt that another burial place for the parish was required, but no steps were taken towards the formation of a Burial Board until Mr Broadmead, with his usual liberality in all matters connected with the town, offered a convenient site for a cemetery.”

The site of just over one acre was part of a field known as ‘North Street Ten Acres’, near the cross roads on the Somerton Road. Two small chapels were built near the entrance, one for Church of England worshippers and one for Nonconformists. These chapels were eventually demolished to make more space for burials. The first interment took place until 23 March 1881.
