The aim of the Langport & District History Society is to raise awareness of the fascinating history of Langport and its neighbouring areas, in the heart of the Somerset Levels. This small town was home to Walter Bagehot, the renowned Victorian constitutional and financial writer; the scene of a major Civil War battle; the home of the famous Kelways nursery. and where a local banking company once had a banknote circulation second only to the Bank of England.
We are a registered charity, no. 1179718. Our object is to advance education for the public benefit into the history of Langport and the surrounding areas. In 2019 we took over responsibility for the Bagehot Memorial Fund and its objectives.
