The street plan of Langport has changed little since mediaeval times. The earliest settlement was on The Hill, close by the church of All Saints and near the Hanging Chapel. The main route to the river crossing was Bow Street, with closes and yards on either side. Cheapside became a location for retail and professional offices, while North Street was developed rather later. At opposite ends of Huish Episcopi, Newtown and Wagg Drove were early residential areas. Twentieth century developments include Garden City, Courtfield, St Mary’s Park and Brooklands.
