Private schools are recorded in Langport from the 17th century. There were both day schools and boarding schools, and from the 19th century Sunday schools were also in operation. The earliest school of any size was Langport Grammar School, said to have been an ‘ancient scole’ before the 1675 bequest that gave it firm foundations. The National School was founded in 1827 and superseded by the Board School in 1876. St Gildas Convent School opened in 1914, and Huish Episcopi Secondary School, now the Academy, in 1940.
