At the eastern end of Bow Street, Cheapside was traditionally where professional people such as solicitors, bankers and doctors preferred to have their offices. Stuckey’s Bank, founded in Bank House in 1770, was the birthplace of Walter Bagehot, the famous Victorian constitutionalist and writer. The Langport Arms was a coaching inn, and the original home of the Post Office. There were also large stores such as Meade’s, Challis’s and H C Norton’s, now the Langport Stores.
