Farming has always played a major part in the local economy. Elsewhere on this site is a history of Cracknell’s farm. Here we add some images from other farms.
Bill Fry owned Long Sutton Farm. As a boy he would walk cattle and sheep to Langport market, held every 2 weeks, to sell, sometimes to Willie Calder, the butcher. During the war Bill was one of the livestock graders at the market for the Ministry along with Willie. The War Office took what cattle they needed for the war effort first. They were graded A to C and farmers paid accordingly.
