We were saddened to hear of the death on 12 April of David Webber. A volunteer guide at the Leighton House Museum in London, he contacted us while researching the life of Emilie Barrington, Walter Bagehot’s sister-in-law. We gave him access to Eliza Bagehot’s diaries, which yielded a great deal of information about Emilie and her connection with the art world that he was delighted to be able to use in his thesis. This introduced us to a completely new perspective on the subject matter contained in the diaries, which has proved to be a new avenue of interest for us, and for other researchers in the same field as David. We were a small part of his life, but his inspiration and encouragement made him a large part of ours. We will always be grateful for his contribution to our understanding of this aspect of Eliza Bagehot’s life.
